Global Head of Real Estate

Thomas (Tom) Arnold Tom joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in 2009 and is based in Abu Dhabi. As Global Head of Real Estate, Tom is responsible for the creation and execution of the sovereign’s investment and business strategy as well as the real estate department’s organizational design and professional talent development. In 2016, Tom was recognized by the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute as one of the top-10 public investors globally.

Tom is a former chairman of the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA), the Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate (AFIRE), is a Governing Trustee of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and currently is on the Global Board of Directors, serves as Global Treasurer, remains a Governor of ULI, and is also a member of the board of directors of the Real Estate Roundtable.

Tom’s prior professional affiliations include a Cerberus Capital Management (a partner and Managing Director), ING (Managing Director), Credit Suisse (Director), and the Praedium Funds at Credit Suisse (Principal). Tom began his career in Finance at Salomon Brothers (now Citigroup) and practiced law for five years, principally with Holland & Knight, focusing on real estate, lending, securities, and bankruptcy matters.

Tom holds a Doctor of Business Administration (2017), a Juris Doctorate (1983), and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics (with honors, 1980) from the University of Florida, a Masters of Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College (1991), and a Masters of Law (Taxation) from New York University (1986). Tom is a licensed attorney, and a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. Tom has co-authored an article in the Journal of Portfolio Management (2017) and published in Tax Notes (2017) and currently is working on another article under a 2018 research grant from the Real Estate Research Institute.
